When Didier first approached me to work on a user interface for Locomotive, his content management system (at the time still called NoCoffeeCMS), I thought it was a great opportunity to finally design my ideal CMS interface. I’ve worked with Joomla, WordPress, Textpattern, and Expression Engine, and none of them had that perfect mix of features, flexibility, and good design (although WordPress and Expression Engine came pretty close). I was inspired by the tabs of The Hit List, a Mac to-do app, and quickly came up with a first mockup, which ended up being pretty close to the final product.

We tweaked the colors and buttons some more, and came up with the idea of assigning a different color to each tab.

Around that time, we also came up with the name “Locomotive”. We liked how it related to the Rails world, and evokes something powerful enough to pull a lot of weight. I remember how I used to play Railroad Tycoon (now renamed Railroads) as a kid, and went looking for locomotive inspiration. The Golden State Locomotive was a perfect mascot: sleek, powerful, and has a beautiful retro art-deco feel.

Since I can’t draw anything more complex than a modal pop-up, the very talented Emmanuel Grard did the actual vector rendering of the locomotive.

For the front-end site, we knew that we wanted something that matched the back-end’s colors and style. But I went too far in trying to keep things simple, and the result looked uninspired and dry.

Thankfully Didier wasn’t afraid to call me out on it and push me harder, and so the second version was completely different, and much more promising.

But something was still missing. The design felt flat and lacking impact, and more importantly my girlfriend didn’t like it (Dribbble might be nice, but no one beats girlfriends when it comes to giving out criticism)

It was also clear that the site didn’t evoke the Ruby universe enough. It was time for a bold move.

Applying a single gradient turned out to make a huge difference, and all the other elements started falling into place. A few tweaks later, Locomotive’s home page was finally good to go.

By the way, you might have noticed that the site doesn’t have any navigation. I liked the idea of the homepage being self-contained. I think it encourages people to scroll down the page, while reassuring them that they won’t need to browse through dozens of pages to find the info they need.

So there you go. I encourage you to give Locomotive a try, and await your feedback on the design and general user experience.

A few days ago I was offered 15 pro accounts for my readers for Rollip.com in exchange for a review of the service on my blog. Although that’s about 5 accounts too many compared to the amount of people who read this blog, I thought it was a good idea especially since the service seems promising.

Rollip lets you upload and photo and apply an effect to it. But where it differs from the hundreds of similar sites already online is that instead of featuring cheesy effects like speech bubbles or a fake painting frame, its effects are actually useful. Like many photoshop actions, they let you emulate the look of cameras like the Lomo, special films, or techinques like HDR.

Rollip's first effect

The results are actually pretty good, and I could see how this service might be very useful for someone who doesn’t have Photoshop or just doesn’t want to spend hours browsing Deviantart for that perfect action.

The only thing I found disapointing is that none of the effects seem to have a name. You just pick them by clicking on a picture. This is good since it lets you pick an effect without knowing anything about photography, but on the other hand it’s a lost opportunity to educate people like me who have no idea what those effects are supposed to be (other than “pretty”).

In fact I’d love to see a short blurb about each effect explaining what photography technique it recreates, and when in time it was used. This would be invaluable for people trying to make sure that all their photos match a certain period in time.

Other than that, I liked the site and I have 15 invites for accounts with 30 free credits included to give away. It’s simple, just go to http://www.rollip.com/pro?coupon=sachagreif and sign up!

I knew when I redesigned my site, it had to be big. It would be linked by all the galleries, it would be tweeted by everybody, and the work offers would start pouring in shortly after. I figured with my new kick-ass portfolio, a high paying job at Apple or Google couldn’t be far away. So I spent hours and hours on the mockup. I did about 15 versions, each slightly better than the last, getting closer and closer to portfolio perfection.

And then I threw all of that away and used a free wordpress theme instead.

Why would I do that? Shouldn’t someone who calls himself a web designer we at least capable of designing his own website? The truth is that all that self-inflicted pressure was getting too paralyzing. How should I style comments? How big do the thumbnails need to be? Where will I put my social network links? All those questions were piling up while I was putting off updating my current site.

But nobody cares if your site is the best designed on the net if it doesn’t actually exist. And I realized if I’m designing sites for a living, my work should be able to speak for itself.

So here you go, a very plain, very boring portfolio. But at least it’s there.

Here’s a quick post to point out two new sites I’ve worked on. I’ve done front-end and user interface design on both sites. The first one is FreeConferenceCalling.com and is a great way to hook up with your clients or coworkers for a quick conference call. The second one is TollFreeConferencing.com and gives you even more control over your conference call, with sub-accounts, billing options, and lots of other great features.

I guess I’m an elitist. It’s almost a dirty word, but if the shoe fits I’ll wear it. I admire companies like Apple or 37signals that design for themselves and do things their own way.
Of course, I realize that the whole Web 2.0 revolution was about giving more power to the common man, and that having big companies listening to our needs is a good thing. After all, if it makes me feel important, it must be good, right ?

Wrong.

What prompted me to write this post is Smashing Magazine’s newest project, the Smashing Magazine book. The folks at Smashing Magazine (one of the most, if not the most widely read web design blog) want to publish a book, and they are asking their readers for advice. They are asking you and me to “suggest the book content”, “suggest the cover design”, and “suggest the layout drafts”.

I was surprised by the globally positive response in the comments, but a few people pointed out that this more or less amounted to spec work, since most of the “suggestions” would not be rewarded, and that the whole project was a little dubious. Those people promptly got flamed by other commenters.

But the problem is not even spec work. This comment really embodies what’s wrong with this whole idea:

The good people at SMASHING MAGAZINE write and put together the book themselves, the reason they are asking such questions is that they want it to fill the best off its potential with regards to its readers…. US!

How are they supposed to know what we want without asking?!

That’s not how it works ! You don’t ask your readers what they want to read about and then write the book ! You write the book first because you have something to say, and if it’s good readers will come. This is exactly why companies like Apple or Nintendo have been so successful designing great products like the iPhone and the Wii: they create great products that they themselves love, they don’t ask people what they want.

So if you want to write a good book, ask your readers for advice. But if you want to write a great book, open up Word and start writing !

I've just wrapped up my newest theme. Two themes, actually, both for Shopify.

I’ve just wrapped up my newest theme. Two themes, actually, both for Shopify. The first one is called Mercury, and you can get it at Themeforest for only $10 !

Besides the cool name and cool design, it has some really useful feature like an RSS feed for your product, multiple navigation menus, and a “featured items” section right on the home page. $10 really isn’t much, so if you like it and you need a simple Shopify theme, go buy it now !

Mercury demo

The second theme is called Hermes, and is an upgraded version of Mercury. So besides all of the features available in Mercury, you get:

An AJAX shopping cart

“Add to cart” buttons on collections pages

Blog with comments enabled

Hermes demo

Since it’s premium, it costs a bit more than Mercury. But at ony $35 (provided you have already bought Mercury), I think it’s still quite reasonable. This include the theme as well as the PSD file in case you want to change images or create your own graphics.

If you want to get it, you need to buy Mercury first, because it’s being sold exclusively at ThemeForest. You can then contact me and I will send you the premium version.

Why “journey” ? Well, this was my first theme, and as people say, “a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step”. Wait, does this mean I should’ve called the template “step” ? Anyway, keeping with the journey theme, this template will take you through a deep jungle, at the bottom of the ocean, before letting you explore the darkest reaches of outer space. Curious ? Then check it out for yourself !

I’ve been using Grooveshark a lot lately, and now that I’ve finally made the switch and bought a Mac, I can use tons of cool little apps such as Fluid, a Site Specific Browser (SSB) which transforms any site into its own application. I did this with Grooveshark (as explained here) and now Firefox can crash, and at least I’ll have some music to keep me company while it relaunches.
The only problem was, the default icon was kinda ugly, since the app simply took the tiny favicon and stuck in on my dock all pixelated. That’s why I decided to do my own icon. I’m not the first one to get the idea, so you can check other icons out and see which one you like best !

Here’s mine, 512*512 px, png format:

Just right click and “save as…”

To modify your app’s icon, you can use a program such as Candybar, which is free to try. Just import the image (File > Import > Image) and select it. You then drag and drop your app from the Finder into the “quick drop” area, and you’re done !

I’m proud to announce that one of my articles was published on Vectortuts today ! This Illustrator tutorial teaches you how to use the effects panel to create a repeating geometrical pattern, which is a very popular style of logo these days.

I hope you enjoy it and that you learn something from it ! More tutorials will be coming once I try out the new features in Illustrator CS4, some of which looks very promising.
